Efacec has just contributed to a historic goal in the Republic of Rwanda: the full electrification of the country in 2023. For the first time, the electrical distribution network of this African nation reaches a voltage level of 220kV thanks to the installation of three high voltage substations by Efacec. These infrastructures are essential for Rwanda’s economic and social development by distributing power to the country’s rural areas.

This is the culmination of a process started in 2017, when Efacec was chosen by the winning consortium of the international tender launched by the Republic of Rwanda for the construction of three new 220kV substations. The technical abilities and skills of Efacec’s High Tension substations area was the reason behind being chosen by the tender’s winning company to implement the project of engineering, supply, supervision and commissioning of the three new substations on a turn-key basis.

The project consisted of three substations (SE Mamba 220kV, SE Rwabusoro 220/110/11kV and SE Bugesera 220/110/11kV).

Efacec was responsible for carrying out all electrical studies, including selectivity studies; integration of the three new substations in the dispatch; schematic design and configuration of all elements of the command, control and protection system; supply of various equipment (high, medium and low voltage, SCCP, telecommunications, chargers and batteries); sea and land transport of equipment to Rwanda; supervision of assembly work; general commissioning of the three substations and assistance to put into service. The equipment used in the command, control and protection system and in the central system was mostly made by Efacec.

This construction work will be fundamental to transport the 80MW produced at Hakan Mamba’s Power Station to the national electricity grid, to supply the new International Airport and the Bugesera Industrial Park as well. This project will make a significant contribution so that by 2023 100% of the population will be connected to Rwanda’s electricity grid.

With a comprehensive presence in the value chain of Energy, Mobility and Environment, Efacec acts as a solution provider, EPC contractor (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) and O&M service partner.
