Efacec was distinguished at the 4th edition of the PT Global Water Awards 2020-21, the internationalization awards for the water sector that are supported by the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Action and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and promoted by Água & Ambiente newspaper and the Parceria Portuguesa para a Água (Portuguese Water Partnership).

Winner in the “Contract Works” category, Efacec was awarded for its project for the Nykobing WWTP in Denmark, which consists of the remodelling, expansion, and improvement of operating conditions, directly benefiting 35,000 inhabitants, and which proves the excellence of the company abroad, in a demanding and competitive market such as Northern Europe. The project will last 28 months and aims to improve the quality of the treated water, the operating conditions of the facility and reduce operating and maintenance costs.

For Ângelo Ramalho, Chairman and CEO of Efacec: “We are very proud of this award in such an important initiative for the water sector and that distinguishes us for our excellence in international markets. This project at the Nykobing WWTP is the first water treatment project in the Nordic market and proves our commitment and competence in the various areas in which we operate.”

“At a time when water is of crucial importance and its scarcity is a global concern, the project at the Nykobing WWTP plays a relevant role as it contributes to the correct use and distribution of this vital commodity, also contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, namely SDG 6: Ensure access to water and sanitation for all,” he adds.

Applications ran until 30 September 2021 and were divided into five categories – services, contract works, supply, start-up and R&D&I, with some of the criteria considered in the evaluation of the projects consisting of:

  • Relevance for the future of the company and/or potential for replicability or for the materialization of a new strategic partnership.
  • A “winning” project in comparison to international competitors.
  • Positive externalities for other Portuguese enterprises.
  • Incorporation of Portuguese added value, in terms of manpower, know-how, technology or products.

The PT Global Water Awards are an initiative of the Portuguese Water Partnership (PPA) and were awarded during the 16th Water Expo Conference that took place on 12 November in Lisbon, attended by the Secretary of State for Internationalization, Eurico Brilhante Dias and was chaired by José Saldanha Matos as chairman of PPA, as well as the main members of the Portuguese water cluster in Portugal.
