Efacec with Key Role in Tenerife Light Rail Expansion

  • Year 2008
  • Country Espanha

The Tenerife Light Rail (MLT) began operating commercially on 2 June 2007.

So far, all of the official authorities’ initial projections involving the system’s occupancy and use have been greatly surpassed. After nine months of operation, the MLT has transported more than 8,000,000 passengers. This number is expected to exceed 10,000,000 after one year of operation.

In view of the project’s great success, the authorities launched a competitive tender for phase two of the system, as planned. This expansion will implement Line 2 of the MLT, comprised of two new branch lines (La Cuesta and Tíncer) and a joint section with the existing Line 1, together with four new stations.

As in the initial project, Efacec will play a key role in this new phase by managing two contracts of the expansion’s electro-mechanical component: the Power Contract (including overhead lines, adaptation of traction substations and low-voltage network for the new stations) and the Systems Contract, managed jointly with the Spanish company IKUSI (including railway and road signalling, operating assistance system, communications, video, public information and ticketing).

Building on its commitment to this part of the transportation sector, in addition to its responsibility for managing these contracts, Efacec will be providing from its own product line some of the most critical equipment and systems for maintaining the light rail’s operation: electrical equipment, Fleet Management and Vehicle Location System (SAE), SCADA remote units and all control centre software, based on the EFARAIL platform.

This new project will thus be added to Efacec’s vast existing line-up of references in the light rail business sector, which include Barcelona (Spain), Dublin – LUAS (Ireland), Jerusalem (Israel), Messina (Italy), Porto (Portugal) and Bursa (Turkey), among others, reinforcing our benchmark position on an international scale.
