Efacec is itself a model of sustainability. From its beginnings as a small company ("A Moderna") founded in 1905, Efacec is today the largest Portuguese group of companies in the electrical sector, employing some 4500 people around the world and operating in over 65 countries in the fields of Energy, Transport and Logistics, Engineering and Services.
Efacec uses 90% proprietary technology, developing its own products, services and solutions, systematically introducing innovative characteristics and cooperating with a large number of technological organisations. Efacec’s activities are of major importance to society, with the company operating in the sectors that present the greatest challenges, such as the Environment, Energy and Transport. Over several decades, Efacec has implemented environmental protection and social measures, and has established a very special relationship with its employees which is demonstrated by the vitality of its Employee Associations. As part of its management system, Efacec has established a code of ethics and a broad range of principles covering the various aspects of sustainability which guide all its activities.
In 2004, with a view to putting its sustainability initiatives on a formal footing, Efacec launched its Sustainable Development programme, defined as the implementation of an integrated medium/long term, balanced (taking account of human and social values) strategic (taking account of the return on different management options) and operational (progress is continuously monitored) management. In the same year, Efacec became a member of BCSD Portugal, the Portuguese branch of the Business Council for Sustainable Development. From then on, information about social responsibility activities has acquired greater prominence in Efacec’s communication, culminating in the regular publication of sustainability reports and the launch of an in-house portal exclusively devoted to the subject.
With a view to ensuring excellence and continuous improvement, Efacec also initiated the practice of systematically comparing the quality of its performance against demanding international benchmarks. In 2006 and 2007, Efacec was placed among the ten finalists in the Corporate Citizenship Awards promoted by PricewaterhouseCoopers and AESE. In 2007, Efacec received an Honourable Mention in the economic category. Similarly, Efacec competed at the end of 2006 for the Most Family Responsible Company award, organised by Deloitte and AESE, coming first in the large company category (ranked equal with EDP).
